In Quebec, many homes still depend on old oil furnaces to cope with harsh winters. However, with the gradual ban on oil heating systems, electricity is emerging as an attractive alternative.

Starting December 31, 2023, the installation and replacement of oil heating appliances will be prohibited in existing buildings. Likewise, after this date, the replacement of an oil heating appliance with a device running on natural gas or propane, including hybrid (dual energy) systems, will no longer be authorized.

This makes electricity, especially electrical systems, more and more attractive.

If you’re considering replacing your system, here’s why electric heating might be the smarter choice.

Ecological benefits and energy efficiency

Opting for an electric furnace or heat pump has several ecological advantages. Unlike fuel oil, electricity in Quebec comes largely from hydroelectricity, a renewable energy source with a minimal ecological footprint.

In terms of efficiency, electrical systems perform well. The “Inverter” heat pump, for example, operates optimally even at temperatures as low as -30°C.

The coefficient of performance (COP) of heat pumps in Quebec varies between 1.4 and 3.3, offering remarkable energy efficiency.

Other practical advantages of electric heating

Electric heating also offers practical advantages.

Electric systems take up less space, with an electric furnace taking up half the space as an oil furnace.

No need to rely on fuel oil deliveries anymore, making the electrical system more convenient.

Additionally, electricity provides an integrated solution for heating, cooling and ventilation. Electric heat pumps heat in winter and cool in summer, ensuring optimal comfort all year round.

The indoor units of “Inverter” heat pumps are also quiet, making no more noise than light rain.

Subsidies and financial aid

Installing a heat pump system can result in significant energy savings. These systems require little electricity to produce heat, resulting in considerable cost savings, sometimes up to half compared to oil systems.

Grants are also available to encourage the transition to electric heating systems.

Chauffez vert offers amounts of up to $1,275 for the replacement of an oil heating system.

In addition, the Rénoclimat program offers subsidies for the installation of heat pumps.

Conversion and regulation

Conversion between oil and electric systems should be carried out by licensed professionals.

The Régie du logement du Québec requires that the installation and maintenance of the heating system be entrusted to qualified professionals with an RBQ license, and the electrical connection must be carried out by a master electrician such as Parker & Poirier.

Switching to electric heating systems offers ecological, practical and economic benefits. Additionally, with regulations in place, it makes sense to consider electricity as the next step in keeping our homes warm sustainably.
